Mujeres de Yoloxochitlan is a regional lot from Mexico, and a brilliant illustration of the truly exciting coffees coming out of the country at the moment – a result of the weather, land and producers working in the area.
The coffee is named after a group of eight women producers from San Mateo Yoloxochitlán, a town in the mountainous area of Sierra Mazateca, Oaxaca. The land is steep, surrounded by mountains, cliffs and forested hills, bathed in rain and mist. This landscape makes for difficult work, but worth it for the extraordinary coffees coming out of the region. The Mazateca is incredibly diverse, ecologically and culturally, and home to an important indigenous community, with 92% of the population speaking an indigenous language, mostly Mazatec, as well as Nahuatl and Mixtec. The region is also one of the poorest areas of Mexico, and growers here can face dangerously low production yields and high rates of poverty.
Our importer, Raw Material, operate in a way which they call “maximum impact coffee”: they form close partnerships at a grass roots level to improve long-term profitability and viability in coffee production, as well as in the short-term paying upwards of the standard market price for rapid returns on investment, bolstering producer income up to 10 times the market standard.
